CVUUS Worship Committee

 

Purpose of committee: 

To provide weekly congregational worship for the purpose of encouraging the spiritual growth of all ages, to strengthen our understanding of Unitarian Universalism, to motivate us to act in faith, and to build a strong, diverse religious community.

 

Key tasks and responsibilities:

Provide weekly worship in collaboration with the minister, lay or guest speaker, Director of Religious Education, worship coordinator, music staff, Hospitality greeters, usher, church administrator, and nursery care. 

To administer the weekly order of service, publicity, and supplies.

To schedule worship services with a diverse and vibrant mix of themes.

To facilitate worship services with guest speakers (scheduling, content, presentation, payment, and note of appreciation).

To collaborate with Personnel Committee on hiring, evaluation, compensation, and dismissal of music staff.

To encourage participation in worship services by all members of the congregation and of the wider community.

Number and composition of committee members:

Six to nine members, including a chairperson, a vice chairperson, a recorder, and a liaison to the music staff

 

Amount of time required: 

  1. Meeting frequency:  the committee meets monthly; coordinators meet when responsible for worship
  2. Other time expected:  preparation for worship (meeting, reading, research, writing, sermon & service preparation); coordination of worship on six – eight Sunday mornings; one day worship retreat

Length of commitment:

Three years (plus second term)

 

Support and training:

  1. Committee chairperson receives training and support through Council of Committee Chairpersons
  2. Committee chairperson is expected to attend district meetings/trainings as appropriate
  3. New members receive orientation training which includes a manual
  4. Minister provides worship skill training at retreat and monthly meetings

Major Goals or Plans for the current FY 2007-2008:

To enhance the music, especially on Sundays when the choir is not singing.

To host “Bring a Friend” Sunday in collaboration with Hospitality, Membership, and Religious Education.

To maintain the quality and accessibility of worship in collaboration with the R.E. program during the transition to one service.

To publicize worship via the web site and local media outlets.
